Documenting the Smithsonian Folklife Festival
In the summer of 2009, I assisted the archivists at the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in documenting the 2009 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, an exposition of living cultural heritage on the National Mall that drew over a million visitors. I collected audio documentation of festival performances and created finding aids for the festival recordings. Some of the recordings created during the festival can be seen in an image to the right. Digital Preservation at the Smithsonian's Ralph Rinzler Archives At the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, I also assisted in digital preservation for audio collections in the Ralph Rinzler Archives, digitizing 1/4" recordings from the archives and creating CD access copies. My digitization work also included 1/4" transfers for the Smithsonian Folkways album Ola Belle Reed: rising sun melodies, produced by Jeff Place. I inspected and cataloged new acquisitions to the collection, focusing mainly on a collection of 31 8mm home movies spanning the years 1939 to 1969, and contributed to the Museum's blog with an essay about home movies and my work on the collection, which can be accessed here: http://wendemuseum.wordpress.com/2009/06/16/the-hoffman-collection/ |
